Constitution of the Appalachian State University Economics Club
Article I – Name
The formal name of the organization shall be the “Appalachian State University Economics Club”, called The Club hereafter.
Article II – Purpose
The purpose of The Club is to promote an interest in economics and related areas.
Article III – Objectives
The objectives of The Club are, among others:
i. To develop a deeper understanding of economics.
ii. To provide opportunities for the development of leadership skills
iii. To provide opportunities for experiential learning through field trips and other activities
iv. To promote interaction between business leaders and club members
v. To promote social interaction among club members
Article IV – Membership
The membership shall consist of all Appalachian State University students that wish to join the club regardless of major. Alumni Membership shall consist of those who were members of the Economics Club while students at Appalachian State University. Honorary membership may be conferred on other individuals by decision of club officers.
Article V – Membership Responsibilities
Members are required to attend meetings, pay any dues determined by the Executive Council (see Article VI) at the beginning of each semester, and participate in The Club sponsored activites.
Additionally, each member will be given the opportunity to join the student chapter of the National Association of Business Economists and will thereby be entitled to all of the benefits entitled to such a membership.
Article VI – Officer Duties
All officers shall be current members of the Economics Club and currently enrolled at Appalachian State University. The Executive Council consists of the President and Vice-President.
President
i. Schedules, structures and presides during club meetings
ii. Appoints any committees necessary
iii. Appoints replacements for vacancies in other club officer positions for the balance of the term.
iv. Co-signs checks drawn on the club bank account
Vice-President
i. Performs all presidential duties in the absence of the president
ii. Responsible for all financial affairs of the club, including management of the club bank accounts.
iii. Responsible for helping to promote club events.
iv. Carries out assignments the president may prescribe
Article VII – Elections/Voting
Eligibility for office: to have been a member of the Economics Club for at least one semester and to be a currently enrolled student.
All officers shall serve for one full year, from September to September of the following year. There is no limit to the number of terms served.
Nominations and elections will be held during the same meeting, typically the first meeting of the Fall semester.
Voting will be by secret ballot.
New officers will have an informal induction and assume duties following election.
All current members of The Club are eligible to vote.
Article VIII – Amendments
An amendment to the constitution may be proposed by any member of the Economics Club. After it is debated it is put to a vote and must pass by two-thirds affirmative vote.
Article IX – Role of Faculty Advisor
The Economics Club will have one or more faculty advisors selected from the faculty of the Department of Economics. The Department Chair will also serve as the Ex Officio advisor.
The advisors’ responsibilities include:
i. Attend meetings
ii. Suggest program and activities
iii. Assist in officer transition
iv. Help promote the club to students
v. Serve as a general resource person
Article X – Parliamentary Procedure
Club meetings and elections will be conducted using Robert’s Rules of Order unless otherwise noted.
Article XI – Meeting Times
The Economics Club will normally meet bi-weekly, or as determined by the Executive Committee, but at least four times per semester.
Article XII – Authority
The Economics Club is subject to the policies and procedures of Appalachian State University and any governing body.
